Day 8: Dairy Queen Energy

Dec 19, 2025

Every holiday season, “Eight Maids a‑Milking” makes its annual comeback.

But in the Work Comp world?
We have moved far beyond milk pails and aprons.

We’ve got eight workflow warriors — the true Dairy Queens of our industry — turning administrative chaos into smooth, predictable, beautifully orchestrated care.

And if you’ve ever worked a case load during peak season, you know exactly why this matters.

A Story from the Barn

A few years ago, I worked with a team that lovingly referred to their inbox as “the barn.”
Not because it smelled (thankfully), but because:

  • tasks wandered off like curious cows
  • documentation piled up like hay bales
  • reminders moved at their own pace
  • and everyone was constantly trying to corral something

One nurse case manager joked, “If we had eight maids, I’d put them all on prior auths.”

But then something shifted.

The team implemented automated workflows—simple ones at first:
task routing, standardized templates, automated reminders, and status triggers.

And suddenly, the barn got quiet.

Not silent.
Just… orderly.

Tasks flowed.
Cases progressed.
Communication tightened.
And the team finally had space to breathe, think, and connect with injured workers like humans—not firefighters.

One case manager said, “It feels like someone turned the lights on.”

That’s the power of workflow optimization.

Why Automation isn’t Cold, It’s Strategic

Healthcare and Work Comp are drowning in administrative tasks.
Research shows that these workers spend hours on documentation, data entry, and manual follow‑ups—time that could be spent on actual care.

Here’s what the data tells us:

  • Healthcare organizations face growing administrative burdens that slow down care and increase the risk of human error.
  • Automation reduces repetitive tasks, improves accuracy, and frees staff for higher‑value work.
  • Integrated workflows are now a necessity, not a luxury, for improving speed and reducing delays in care delivery.
  • Clinics using workflow automation report fewer mistakes, faster processes, and happier staff.
  • Automation helps clinicians focus on patient‑centered responsibilities, improving outcomes and satisfaction.

In other words:
Efficiency isn’t about replacing people — it’s about empowering them to spend their time on more human required tasks.

Automation is the warm, steady rhythm behind the scenes that keeps cases moving and people healing.

The Dairy Line Metaphor (Because It Just Works)

When automation kicks in, it’s like watching a well‑oiled dairy line:

  • No spills
  • No bottlenecks
  • No wandering cows
  • No “who owns this task?” confusion
  • No last‑minute scrambles

Just smooth, steady, progress. And predictable progress is the heartbeat of great Work Comp.

Because when the system flows, people recover faster.
When tasks don’t get stuck, outcomes improve.
When teams don’t drown, they can actually care.

What Efficiency Really Gives Us

Let’s be honest:
No one gets into Work Comp because they love paperwork.

Efficiency gives us:

  • Time — the most precious resource in care
  • Clarity — fewer surprises, fewer dropped balls
  • Consistency — every injured worker gets the same high‑quality experience
  • Confidence — teams know the system has their back
  • Connection — more space for empathy, coaching, and human moments

On Day 8 of the 12 Days of Work Comp, we raise a glass (of milk, naturally) to the unsung heroes:

  • the processes that keep us aligned
  • the automations that keep us moving
  • the systems that keep us sane
  • and the people who make it all work

They’re the Dairy Queens of Workflow — and thanks to them, our barn runs like a dream.
